A police sergeant named Somapala Ranpittige aged 54 living in Chilaw district normally sends money through bank to his son studying in Japan. In order to remit money to his son, he went to Chilaw bank and submitted money withdrawal form for Rs. 505,000. As the money was machine counted, he did not count it again in front of the bank officer when it was given to him.
He took Rs.5, 000 out of this money for his expenses and reached Maravila bank to deposit the balance Rs.500, 000. He filled pay in voucher and submitted the balance money to the bank officer to deposit in his account. The bank officer in turn machine counted the money and said, Rs, 50,       45,000 (fifty lakhs and forty five thousand) was there. Honest police sergeant realised that the bank officer had given him more money due to an oversight. He did not express any surprise before the bank officer. But he wanted the bank officer to remit Rs 45,000 to his son studying in Japan and deposited 4 lakhs and fifty five thousand in his account.
Along with the 45 lakhs straight away went to the Chilaw bank branch where he withdrew the money and met the bank manager. He told him that his bank officer at the counter has by mistake given him Rs. 45, 000, 00 (45 lakhs) more when he withdrew the money. The bank manager summoned the officer concerned and cautioned him against repetition. He thanked the police sergeant for his honesty.
