Mersal Box Office: Will It Be Vijay’s First Film To Collect Rs 200 Crore?

Even as the Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s Mersal has stirred a national debate on several fronts, the film continues to dominate the box office in Tamil Nadu and other parts of the world. Mersal benefited from releasing during the festival of Deepavali, as it ended the five-day opening weekend with more than Rs 100 crore in its kitty.

Mersal has collected more than Rs 75 crore in Tamil Nadu alone and the latest reports have pegged its worldwide collection as more than Rs 150 crore. In five days, Mersal has approximately collected Rs 6.90 crore at Chennai box office, beating the records set by previous blockbusters of Vijay. Not just in the capital, the film is doing a tremendous job in districts of the state as well.

The film, in five days, has come to overtake the lifetime collections made by Suriya’s 7aum Arivu and Vijay’s Their at the theatres too.

Mersal is also keeping the cash registers ringing at the United States box office. The film has sped past the coveted $1 million mark at the box office beating Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam. “#Mersal USA $120K+ on Sunday, close to $1.1M USA alone, surpasses Viswaroopam and becomes highest non Rajini Tamil grosser, 4th all time!,” ATMUS Entertainment, the film’s distributor, tweeted.

Mersal is making solid collections in France, Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand among other international markets.

The Vijay film is expected to set other bigger and new benchmarks in terms of box office collection. Indeed, the controversy surrounding the film has helped it to garner a huge amount of attention worldwide, which is translating into more footfall at the theaters.
