Followed By Heated Arguments In Parliament Party Leaders Meets Today To Discuss LG Election

The Court of Appeal issued an interim injunction order on Wednesday (22) against implementing the gazette notification on delimitation until the 4th of December. The order was issued after taking into consideration a petition filed by 6 voters. The petition accuses subject Minister Faizar Mustapha of misusing his power to amend multi-member seats as individual seats. The UNP backbenchers fired salvo blaming SLFP minister for manipulating the delay.
Under these circumstances, backbenchers of the United National Party entered into heated argument yesterday in Parliament and insisted the LG election should be held even if it is under the old electoral system.
The Speaker said a party leaders meeting will be held today to discuss the issue when Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe returns from India.
