JVP MP Vijitha Herath addressing the media at the party head office in Pelawatte yesterday (4) said, that President Maithripala Sirisena’s Wednesday evening address to the nation was nothing but a balance sheet of frauds committed by the two main parties during the last 70 years.
He further said thus “The president’s address was only a confession of what the SLFP and UNP did in the name of governing the country. It is nothing but a balance sheet of their administrations. The statement indicates how they both swindled public funds. The government which came to power promising to bring thieves to justice and to put an end to corruption had robbed the Central Bank. The President’s statement shows that the bond commission has observed that the Prime Minister tried to save the former Central Bank Governor. In addition the statement also indicates that the President himself is trying to exonerate the Prime Minister. We are waiting to see how the President will take action against the swindlers. He threatened to use a madu waligaya (a whip made from stingray tail) and recently wielded a sword. We know that both his whip and sword will spare the Prime Minister. The PM was behind the scam. He is the one who appointed Arjuna Mahendran to the post of Governor Central Bank. The Prime Minister is the one who kept protecting Mahendran. In addition, he is the one who worked so hard to have Mahendran reappointed as Governor. So the Prime Minister is the accused number one, in our opinion. The President has, in his address, sought to whitewash the prime minister.”We were glad to hear the President at the end of his address admit that politicians from both main parties should be held responsible for the scams. We call upon people to read and listen to the concluding part of the President’s address to the nation before they vote next month. The President said members of both major political parties had been made accused in the cases moved in court on the basis of findings and recommendations made by the commissions”.
