Attorney General Informs SC That President is Entitle to Hold Office For 6 Years
The President Maithripala Sirisena has required the Supreme Court to correctly interpret 19th Amendment t o the constitution, which reduces the period of the President from 6 years to five years and sent their decision on or before 14th January 2018.
The Chief Justice in turn has appointed a five member bench comprising Chief Justice Priyasath Dep, justices Eva Wanasundera, B.P. Aluvihara, Sisira J. De Abrew and K.T. Chitrasiri to interpret the 19th Constitutional Amendment on the President’s term.
As the President has taken oath to serve for six years under the previous constitution prior to the 19th Amendment reducing the period to five years, he is entitle to hold the office for 6 years. AG made the submission to the Supreme Court today
He further said in his submission that five year term is applicable only for persons, who come into power in future.
As from 11 am today the Supreme Court is examining all relevant facts and legal position prior to coming to a conclusion.
