Radical Changes Introduced to Prosecute Large Scale Frauds Within 3 Years.

Prime Minister RanilWickremesinghe addressing an election rally at Homagama said, that people are asking why the culprits, who had defrauded state assets had not been prosecuted during the last three year period. I wish to tell them that several cases against those who squandered state assets have been filed in the courts. But when the cases are taken up for inquiry it get postponed for 2 to 3 months. Police informed me at this rate, it will take more than 8 years to deliver a verdict. By the time witnesses may disappear.
After considering above facts, now we have enacted regulations to accelerate judicial process by empowering the Attorney General to file action direct in the HighCourt after police submit necessary documents and evidences. Further, High Court judges are required to hear the case on a daily basis and deliver the verdict as early as possible within 3 years, thus preventing legal personnel from manipulating the system.
RanilWickremasinghe further stated that the current legal system within Sri Lanka is undergoing radical change to enable the justice system to become more efficient and prevent the delay of justice.
Hence, large scale frauds done by the people in the previous regime will be completed within 2 or 3 months and those found guilty will be behind bars by March 2018.
