Offspinner Akila Dananjaya claimed five wickets in his Test debut as Sri Lanka completed a comprehensive 215-run win over Bangladesh on the third day of the second Test on Saturday, sealing the series 1-0.
The first Test in Chittagong ended in a draw.
The Sri Lankan spin trio of Dananjaya, Dilruwan Perera and Rangana Herath shared 10 Bangladesh second-innings wickets as the hosts were out for 123 runs in 29.3 overs while chasing an improbable target of 339.
Dananjaya returned figures of 5-24 while left-arm spinner Herath had 4-49 and Perera 1-32.
Dananjaya had eight wickets on debut, including his 3-20 in the first innings.
Officials said Herath became the highest wicket-taker in Tests as a left-arm bowler, eclipsing Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram’s 414 wickets.
Mominul Haque was the highest scorer for Bangladesh in the second innings with 33 while Mushfiqur Rahim made 25.
Earlier Saturday, Sri Lanka ended its second innings on 226, adding to its 222 from the first innings. Bangladesh scored 110 in its first innings.
The visitors added 26 runs from its overnight total of 200-8. Roshen Silva, who guided the lower order, was unbeaten on 70.
Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam struck twice in his first over of the day to wrap up the Sri Lankans innings.
Taijul was the most successful bowler for Bangladesh, returning figures of 4-76, while pace bowler Mustafizur Rahman had 3-49.
Off-spinner Perera struck in the second over of Bangladesh’s chase, dismissing opener Tamim Iqbal for 2.
Similar to its first-innings’ collapse when it lost 5-3, Bangladesh lost 5-23 in its second innings to make it an easy victory for Sri Lanka inside three days.
