Possibility of Removing Ban On Social Media Tonight Exists

A blanked ban on social media was imposed on Sri Lanka on March 7 in the wake of racial riots unleashed on Kandy after a Sinhalese man was killed by four Muslim men.
Mobs, largely fuelled by inflammatory posts on Facebook and other social media sites, engaged in riots. Mobs in Kandy went on rampage and torched Muslim establishments and homes prompting the Police to impose a curfew on Kandy in a bid to control the situation.
Mixed views were expressed by the civil society against and for controlled social media.
Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure Minister Harin Fernando said, his ministry and the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) were in discussions with Facebook representatives to remove hate speech. Hence, the ban on social media would be likely removed tonight.
