The JVP has charged certain factions are opposed to the 20th Constitutional Amendment for their own personal political agendas.
Speaking at a seminar held in Colombo JVP party leader Parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake charged political opportunists are against abolishing the executive presidency.
He said presenting Gotabaya Rajapaksa as a presidential candidate is clearly a political agenda adding however Gotabaya Rajapaksa can be Presidential candidate only if Mahinda Rajapaksa is ineligible to do so.
The MP said if the Executive Presidency is maintained then Mahinda Rajapaksa cannot be a presidential candidate and therefore the opportunity goes to Gotabaya Rajapksa.
However he stressed if the 20th Constitutional Amendment is passed and the Executive Presidency is abolished, then Mahinda Rajapaksa will have an opportunity to become Prime Minister, which the group believes would close the door for Gotabaya.
He said therefore while some attempt to introduce a discussion for the sake of democracy, the SLPP’s political agenda is in disarray
