Narendra Modi to visit Sri Lanka to sign the Indo-Lanka Economic and Technology Agreement

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has told the Parliament that he had invited his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi to visit Sri Lanka to sign the Indo-Lanka Economic and Technological Agreement.

Making a special statement on his recent visit to India, the Prime Minister has said that he had not discussed the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with India during his Indian tour from September 14 to 16. The Sri Lankan government had thanked India for its assistance in development and resettlement projects, the Prime Minister said. “We discussed the ways and means of improving bilateral economic relationships between the two nations and signing of the Indo-Lanka Economic and Technological Agreement. Indian Prime Minister agreed that we should enter into the agreement around May or June 2016.”

The delegations of the two nations had discussed the development plans to continue Trincomalee Oil tank farm as a joint venture, establishing an oil refinery by Indian companies in Sri Lanka with the permission of the Central Environmental Authority and to finalize the work on the thermal power plant, the premier has said.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is aiming to become the best tourist hub in South East Asia and will look to attract more than 2.5 million tourists by 2016.
