The Navy submitted a report to Defence Secretary, Karunasena Hettiarachchi on Wednesday over an incident, where Chief Minister Nazeer Ahmed reprimanding Sampur Camp Commandant Captain ,Ranjith Premeratne in the presence of US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Athul Keshap, which went viral in social media and later it was released to the media.
In addition to the report submitted by the Navy, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has called for a report from the Eastern Province Chief Minister regarding the incident that took place during a prize-giving at Trincomalee-Sampur Maha Vidyalaya. Chief Minister is given an opportunity to place his explanation about the incident. In the meantime, defence Secretary has declared that all three forces military camps/ installations out of bounds to EP Chief Minister.
The Prime Minister had asked both the Navy and the Chief Minister to refrain from making any media comments over this incident that led to controversy until the President takes an appropriate decision.
The Prime Minister had told the relevant parties that a final decision on this matter would be taken only after the return of the President.
The Prime Minister is to hand over Navy’s as well as Chief Minister’s report to President Maithripala Sirisena when he returns to the country after the G7 Summit in Japan.
