Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils Faizer Mustapha said the government will not hold the local government election under the preferential voting system under any circumstance.
Mustapha stressed polls will only be held under the electoral system.
The Minister said the government is making every effort to complete the delimitation process and conduct the election by April next year.
He said it was collectively agreed by all parties of the opposition for the present delimitation.
The Minister said the preferential and proportional system will not be enacted adding the election will be held before the 2017 Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
Minister Faizer Mustapha dismissed all allegations leveled against the President for the continuous delay in conducting the local government election.
He said the impending elections cannot be conducted with the existing demarcations.
The Ministry of Local Government and Provincial Councils last evening decided not to extend the term of 23 Local Government bodies.
Accordingly all local government institutions will now be controlled by special commissioners or district secretaries.
