Police Request to Ban IUSF Protest Rally Rejected by Court

Fort Police, making submissions to Court, stated that they had received information that the IUSF and six other student unions were planning a protest march,  from the Fort Railway Station to the Presidential Secretariat, and trying to enter the latter forcibly today(14).
Police further told Court that the intended protest march was also being organized to voice opposition to the imprisonment of IUSF Convener Lahiru Weerasekera, who is currently in prison as well as to protest against the Malabe SAITM University.
Police thus requested Court to ban the marchers from proceeding to the afore-mentioned venue.
The Fort Magistrate ordered the Police to act according to the provisions in the Police Act and rejected their request. Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne yesterday rejected a request by the Fort Police to ban the proposed protest march organized by the Inter-University Students’ Federation (IUSF) and six other student unions, from proceeding to the Presidential Secretariat today.
