Labour and Trade Unions Relations Minister ,W.D.J. Seneviratne said legal action will be taken against employers who do not pay the Rs 2,500 monthly salary increase promised to private sector employees.
He said estate sector employees are also entitled to the salary increment. Seneviratne said some estate companies have faced a problematic situation in giving the increment due to the financial issues they face.
The minister said the government has discussed this with owners of estate companies.
He made these observations in Parliament yesterday in response to a question raised by opposition member Vasudeva Nanayakkara.
He said the government following discussions with estate sector companies decided to grant a Rs. 1 billion loan through People’s Bank and Bank of Ceylon to grant the salary increment to the employees.
