Lasantha’s Murder :Non Submission of Documents by Army -CID Complains

When the case of former Sunday leader Editor,  Lasantha Wickramathunga’s murder  was taken up yesterday in Galkissa Magistrate Court, CID reported that required documents were not given by the Army .Further required telephone numbers list was also not furnished by the Mobital limited . CID in their special report to  the court referred to the request made by the Driver of Lasantha Wickramathunga that he  wants to make a confession as per clause  127 of the Penal Code.
The suspect was arrested and remanded after identification by Lasantha’s driver. He  was brought to the court with his face covered,  as he has another case in Gampaha court,  where  he has to be identified. CID submitted a witness , who is expected to identify the suspect in an identification parade fell sick and unable to be present in court. CID said that they have personally gone and checked the condition of the witness and satisfied.
Defence lawyer appearing on behalf of detained suspect moved for bail. The CID vehemently protested against it stating that he would interfere with the witnesses  . At this time defence lawyer brought to the notice of the court that scheduled identification was not done due to the illness of the witness. How long it will  take for him to recover and come to court to identify  is not known. Hence, it is unfair to keep the suspect in the remand until  such time, he argued
After considering submission made by the counsels, Magistrate personally examined detained suspect in his Chamber and ordered to remand him till 11 th August 2016.  Further, he ordered Director of prison to produce him with face covered in Gampaha Magistrate court on 8th August in connection with Upalai Thennakone’s  attempted  murder case.  Further, he ordered next identification date as  11th August 2016. If the witness cannot come to court on that day, a decision will be arrived, he said. Army was ordered to submit all required documents before the next date. Mobitel too was ordered to submit list of telephone call numbers before the next date Case was postponed 11th August 2016.
