Speaking on the political programme on a popular TV channel in the country, Rohan Weliwita, secretary to the media of Ex-president Mahinda Rajpaksa, stated that Mr. Rajapaksa will contest the August 17th General Election under the betel leaf symbol.
Mr. Rohan Weliwita pointed out that the Ex-president has also received the blessings of incumbent President Maithripala Sirisena but added that an official announcement is yet to be made as to what district he will be contesting from.
He added that the president and the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) have given the former president the freedom of deciding the district from which he wants to contest.
