Constitutional Crisis Due to Urban Development Authority Grabbing Powers of PCs ….

Press advertisement have been published in press stating that some of the powers now enjoyed  by the Provincial Councils  and Local Authorities are to be  taken by Urban  Development Authority  . Chief Ministers of all nine Provincial Councils and Local Authorities flocked together  to fight against  this  attempt by the Central  Government. Western Province Chief Minister Isura Desapriya is spear heading this fight . Chief Minister of all Provinces are poised to meet and decide the course of action to be taken in this connection.  In the meantime ,  when  press contacted  Northern Provincial Council Chief Minister  C.V. Wickneswaran regarding  this matter, he said that the Provincial Council  administration was left disgruntled because the powers given under 13^th amendment  to the  constitution  have been taken back  step by step by the Central Government . Provincial  Councils pointed out this to the Central govt on several  occasions,   but no results. Provincial Councils got together and supported  government  development activities in the past. Central Government taking back the  powers vested  with the Provincial Councils  under 13^th  amendment  to the Constitution will create  constitutional crisis . All Provincial Councils should get together  and fight tooth and nail against this attempt by the Central Government, he concluded.
