Water Tariffs Rates to be Increased

In a function held in Kurunagala yesterday, (20) Minister of Urban Development, Water Supply and Drainage Rauff Hakeem said,  that the necessity has arisen  to increase water  tariffs in future.  To purify  1,000 litre  of water, Rs 48 is incurred  as against Rs 12 charged  to consumers.  In other words only  ¼  of the cost  is recovered from consumers.  Treasury does not grant funds to the Water Resources Board.  We maintained  water supply services by obtaining loans from outside.  Hence in order to re pay a loan,  a small increase will be introduced.  But he ensured no charges will be made  from  Samurdhi beneficiaries.
