Followed by the death of a fisherman, who was alleged to have been shot dead by Srilankan Navy, tension is building up in Tamil Nadu . Indian Coast guards on duty at Nagai arrested 10 Srilankan fisherman, who alleged to have been fishing in Indian waters beyond Srilankan maritime borders . They were handed over to the police, who produced them in Elumpoor Court . Judge Chandran asked Srilankan fisherman how they were treated by the coast guards and the Indian police? They said, they were treated well by both. At this time Judge Chandran has advised them to go and tell their Srilankan Navy how they were treated well in India.
Srilankan fisherman were remanded till 23rd March 2017 and detained in Pulal prison.
In the meantime, Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Mahinda Ameeraweera and Indian High Commissioner for Srilanka met and discussed about the fisherman issue.
In order to defuse building up tension followed by the killing of a fisherman and in the best interest of fisherman of both countries , they agreed to release 85 Indian fisherman in Srilankan jail and 10 Srilankan fisherman in Indian jail.
