Department of Registration of Persons stated, that current identity card system which was in force for 45 years has become outdated. Many frauds were caused using duplicated identity cards using machinery.
In order to stop all these irregularities, electronic identity cards will be issued. Until such time as an interim arrangement a smart Identity Card will be issued as from May until the proposed electronic Identity Card will be issued. With the introduction of this smart ID , methodology followed in issuing NIC as from the year 1972 will be done away with.
