Scheduled Parliamentary Sittings Can Only be Made at the Request of the PM – Speaker

Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) leader and Joint Opposition (JO) Parliamentarian Dinesh Gunawardena has written to the Prime Minister on behalf of the Joint Opposition requesting to summon Parliament for a special session to discuss the prevailing issues pertaining to the Meethotamulla garbage dump. Further  he requested   the Speaker  to summon Parliament for a special session  to discuss  Meethotamulla garbage disaster .
In response, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said, that Parliament can only be summoned at the request of the Prime Minister. But  he has not been informed or requested yet by the Prime Minister to summon Parliament.
Further he said,  that the next Parliamentary  sitting has been scheduled for May 3 and the date can only be changed at the request of the Prime Minister.
