The United Nations Office in Colombo said 7 international search and rescue teams are currently monitoring the situation in Sri Lanka.
Two teams are ready to deploy upon receipt of an official request from the Government.
Issuing a statement, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Sri Lanka said an ad hoc Humanitarian Country Team meeting was convened to take stock of the existing situation in country capacity to provide additional support.
The coordinator said HCT member partners are supporting ongoing rescue operations and have donated hygiene kits, jerry cans and water purification tablets for distribution by local authorities.
The UN Coordinator said the HCT is also providing technical support to line ministries on information management, analysis and coordination of medical teams.
