A Proposal was made in the last budget to increase fines for violating road rules. However, it met stiff resistance from drivers, specially from three wheel drivers .
Hence, a committee comprising Transport and Finance Ministry Secretaries , Commissioner General of Motor vehicle and DIG in charge of traffic police was appointed by the President to study the budget proposal and make their recommendations.
The Secretary of the Ministry of Transport Nihal Samarawera said, that he has submitted the report on the bill to increase fares for transport offences to the Parliament today.
