Cabinet of Ministers Agreed to Introduce New Laws For Election Expenses

Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe while  speaking during a media briefing held yesterday said, that the Cabinet of Ministers has agreed to introduce new laws for the reduction of election expenses.
The proposal was made by President Maithripala Sirisena.
The government hopes to introduce new laws before the next Local Government Elections. Cabinet’s attention was directed towards a proposal aimed at managing election expenditure and in doing so formulate a platform needed to hold a free and fair election.
He further said one of the contributing factors to corruption during an election is expenditure and a host of laws will be imposed in future to reduce expenditure over elections in order to control corruption. All parties in Parliament have arrived at the consensus to hold the General Election under the mixed system.
