The Vavuniya Campus of the University of Jaffna has been indefinitely closed.
Vice-Chancellor of the Jaffna University Professor Ratnam Wigneswaran said that the decision close the campus was taken following unrests by students last evening.
The unrest was reported after a group of students attempted to place a religious statue at the Vavuniya Campus, resulting in objections by the campus administration.
The administration had informed the students that permission cannot be granted to place any new statue in the campus premises as no religious statues have been placed in the campus.
Followed by this, the authorities decided to close the campus due to the unruly behaviour by a group of students.
He said the students were also asked to vacate the campus hostel.
