Army Commander and Defense Secretary Oppose Arrest of Two Army Officers Over Eknaligoda Disappearance

The Defense Secretary and the Army Commander had strongly opposed the CID’s moves to arrest two Lieutenant Colonels in connection with the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Ekanaligoda, Fast News learns.

The two officials had opposed the arrest on the basis that the two officers played important roles during the final phases of war against the LTTE.

However, the CID urged the army surrender the two officers to the Police since criminal charges had been leveled against them over Eknaligoda’s disappearance.

The CID had said their contribution to the final phase of war did not grant them “licenseā€ to engage in criminal activities.

The CID had also informed the President and the Prime Minister of the necessity of arresting the two Lieutenant Colonels in connection with the disappearance.

Following the pressure coming from the Police and the political circles, the Defense Secretary and the Army Commander finally gave the green light to the proceedings, highly placed political sources had told a prominent online news portal.
