President arrives in New York for 76th session of United Nations

(FASTNEWS | COLOMBO) – President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who left for the United States to attend the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, has arrived in New York today (19).

The President and his delegation were received at the John F. Kennedy International Airport by the Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations, Mohan Peiris.

The United Nations Heads of State Summit begins on 21 September Tuesday and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is scheduled to address the summit on 22 September.

The theme of this year’s UN General Assembly is “Hope for recovery from the COVIS-19 virus is to develop resilience, rebuild sustainability, respond to the needs of the planet, respect human rights and revitalize the United Nations.”

The Foreign Minister level conference of the General Assembly will begin tomorrow (20) morning.

Heads of state from a number of countries have already arrived in New York to attend the event, the Presidential Media Unit said.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is scheduled to address the Food Systems Conference on 23 September and the High Level Dialogue on Energy on 24 September.

During the session, the President is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with several Heads of States.

A delegation comprising of the External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris Peiris, Chief Adviser to the President Lalith Weeratunga and Foreign Secretary Admiral Prof. Jayanath Colombage are accompanying the President.
