The final decision regarding the 20th amendment to the Constitution was expected to be made at the Cabinet meeting held yesterday (27).
The draft bill put together to change the Sri Lankan electoral system was scheduled to be presented to parliament on the 19th May. This decision was however deferred by the Cabinet for one week so that the appointed sub-committee would have time to further revise the draft proposals.
According to Minister S.B. Dissanayake who is a member of the 5 person sub-committee, all minority parties have given the green light regarding the draft bill. The Minister had further stated that he expected the draft bill to be approved by Cabinet at the meeting held yesterday (27).
Opposition leader Nimal Siripala De Silva has denied allegations that the SLFP are against a change to the established electoral system and emphasized his party’s wishes to see the new system set in motion.
