Landau Talks “Avatar” Sequels Tech, Plan
(FASTNEWS | COLOMBO) – 20th Century Studios held a big presentation for “Avatar: The Way of Water” at D23 over the weekend.
Sigourney Weaver, Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang and producer Jon Landau were all on hand in the room (and director James Cameron by video call) to discuss the long-awaited sequel.
Following that presentation, Landau briefly spoke to Collider about the making of the sequels, why they planned for four in total, and how advanced they are at a technological level.
Landau revealed the original plan was to do three sequels, and they hired three teams of writers to work with Cameron on them, but when they realised there was more story to tell they decided to break it out into four movies.
He also says the that they’re inventing new tech for the films is one of the big joys of the project, and has led to some interesting times at work:
“There are days, truly, where we’ve had to stop and name something that we did because we’ve never been done before, and if we didn’t name it, we couldn’t go back to it. It’s like, ‘Okay, we like that. Let’s name it and let’s move on.’ And then, a month later, when we need to do it again, we have a name for it, so we can go back to it.”
“Avatar: The Way of Water” is in theaters on December 16th. Tickets for the theatrical re-release of the first film later this month just went on sale.
