Medical students protest Private medical school……….. again.

A demonstration was held by the Medical Faculty activists committee in front of the University of Colombo today (28).

This was yet another of the ongoing protests since 2009 against the Private medical school in Malambe and also to protest not receiving Mahapola student support scholarships not being given throughout February till May.

The movement against the Private Medical University is rallied on the basis that the University does not meet the standard to give medical degrees and that doctors from such institutions are not up to par with the necessary knowledge to practice medicine.

It is questionable as to the genuine nature of this protest as protestors never ask that the matter be looked into and measures be taken to ensure that the necessary standards are met, instead it is always the same slogan “close the degree shop”.

Sri Lanka has a very low doctor to patient ratio which cannot be met by the yearly output of doctors from State Universities. Private Universities with government set standards would be the ideal in order to meet a better ratio.
