Future Dhal and Sugar Shortage Unavoidable Pettah Whole Salers Association

Pettah Wholesalers Association has warned  future dhal and sugar shortage. Once present stock of dhal and sugar sold out, new stock procured at higher price cannot be sold at  retail prices fixed by the Government.

In the  Budget for the year 2016 ,  the Government fixed maximum retail prices for dhal, sugar and 6 other essential items.

Accordingly, the control price of  dhal was fixed  at Rs. 169 per kg. However sugar price was not fixed.

Current market price of unpacked  sugar and  packed sugar are Rs 87 and  Rs 95 per kg respectively.

No trader will come forward to import and sell these items below cost. Hence, shortage of these items  in near future cannot be ruled out.
