HIV Suspected Kuliyapitiya Child to Ananda College
A child living with his mother who is infected with HIV was refused admission in Schools in Kuliyapitiya.
The plight of the child attracted wide media coverage and revealed the lack of knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS in the country. Even the Education Minister made a controversial statement, saying that the child has to be separated from ‘HIV infected’ mother, leading to widespread condemnation.
Followed by this, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has directed Education Ministry to ensure the child in Kuliyapitiya, who was denied a school due to false HIV rumours, is admitted to Ananda College, Colombo, or Kingswood College, Kandy.
Sources said that the Prime Minister made this direction following an offer made by the Ananda College to admit the child.
