Norochcholai Recommenced Power Generation Operation

In recent past, power disruption in the power supply was reported in several areas across the island due to a technical failure  in the national power grid.

The Norochcholai Coal Power Plant was inactive since Sunday due to an explosion in the Biyagama Main Transmission line, where the power from Mahaweli connects to Colombo, resulting in a fire.

Accordingly, the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant was unable to add 900 megawatts of electricity to the national power grid due to failure.

Power generation at the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant has commenced successfully this morning , said CEB sources. The third phase is expected to be  connected to the national power grid shortly. The CEB said the first and second phases will also be added to the national power grid within the day.

The CEB said power cuts will not be required from today if the measures taken to rekindle the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant are successful.
