Susil Premajayantha, Minister of Science and Research, Vice President of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and National Organizer of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has indicated that he is seriously considering a permanent departure from politics.
He indirectly expressed this at a function held at the SLFP Headquarters yesterday to congratulate new UPFA General Secretary, Mahinda Amaraweera on assuming office.
Premajayantha commenced his political career as a member of the Kotte Municipal Council and was later elected a member of the Western Provincial Council. He was appointed Chief Minister of the WPC after his predecessor Maurice Rajapaksa died in office. He was elected to Parliament and held the portfolios of Education, Petroleum Oil Resources Development, etc in Parliament. After the UPFA was established in the year 2004, Premajayantha was elected as its first General Secretary. As i have held the post of Secretary, UPFA my next elevation should be to President post, jokingly he quipped.
He relinquished this position in August 2015 after a 13th August 2015 Court injunction order prevented him from serving in that position.
He said yesterday that he would make a special statement on the day he retires from politics about the defeats in the last two elections. Until such time , he would not talk about the reasons for the defeats in the last two elections. They should be dealt with as different issues. “On whatever day I retire from politics I will mention those factors. That day is not too far away. I will speak about it on that day.
Premajayantha said he would also reveal legal issues, which impacted on those factors on the day that he quits politics.
