Minister of Public Administration and Management, Ranjith Maddumabandara says the objective of the United National Party is to fulfill the promises made to the public.
He said the United National Party will have an edge over SLFP, if an election is held.
The government was being questioned by the opposition as to why the local government elections are not held in time.
Minister Maddumabandara said, while Former President MP Mahinda Rajapaksa is holding rallies with a group of SLFP MPs , another group of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party are with President Maithripala Sirisena.
The Minister said the UNP will not exploit such divisions within the SLFP to hold elections adding that the government will first fulfill its promises to the public and prepared to face any future election.
The Minister said there were certain leaders within the SLFP who exploited President Maithripala Sirisena, while supporting Former President MP Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Minister Maddumabandara said while the SLFP is split in two, President Maithripala Sirisena remains the legitimate leader of the Party.
He added that MPs Wimal Weerawansa, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, and Udaya Gammanpila have failed to obtain votes and are now engaged in futile efforts.
