Most of the passengers on board in hijacked Egyptian airliner have been freed, the airline said.

Egypt Air said negotiations had resulted in the release of all those on board Flight MS181 except the crew and four foreign passengers.

An Egypt Air airliner has been hijacked and forced to divert to Larnaca airport on the south coast of Cyprus.

Confirmed reports said that Flight MS181, an Airbus A320 carrying 81 passengers from Alexandria to Cairo, was after a passenger claimed that he was wearing an explosives belt.

Negotiations are under way but no demands have been made by those in control of the plane, reports say.

A local journalist has told the BBC that some passengers had been seen leaving the plane.

Larnaca airport has been closed and scheduled flights diverted elsewhere.

Egyptair airliner is hijacked after leaving Alexandria and lands at Larnaca airport in Cyprus, reports said.

Earlier Reports said  the Airbus A320 has more than 80 passengers on board but Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation reported  55 people are on board.

News agencies said  airline and Egyptian government sources as saying that the domestic flight travelling from Alexandria to Cairo was taken over by at least one armed hijacker.

He asked for the flight to land in Cyprus, an EgyptAir spokeswoman said.
