Railway Gate Operators Strike Today

The Railway Unprotected Railway Crossing  Gate Operators’ Union has decided to refrain from their duties demanding that their daily wage be increased.

Reports say that currently 2061 persons are engaged in this service with three employees serving at each of a total of 681  railway gates.

The Union’s former general secretary, Nimal Chandrasiri said the promise President Maitripala Sirisena had given for making Rupees 500 the minimum daily wage of a labourer should be honoured.

Motorists are advised to be cautious when crossing railway crossings during their strike action.
