Kidney Disease Root Cause in Srilanka is Still Mysterious

A joint China – Sri Lanka research team was detailed to ascertain the root cause for the fast-spreading kidney disease in Sri Lanka. But the team was unable to determine the root cause.

The researchers said, that 32 tests carried out so far have been unable to confirm the link of the disease to Cadmium, Arsenic or Glyphosate.

The research team also presented a report to President Maithripala Sirisena which contained details of the tests carried out and the possible future action plan.

The research team’s Project Director, Chief Engineer of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Dr. S. K. Weragoda said, that a conclusive connection to the Kidney disease could not be made from the Cadmium and Arsenic percentages found in water samples obtained from the areas where the disease is most prevalent in.

Another identical test  carried out in Japan as well, but the results have been similarly inconclusive.

Dr. Weragoda further added that large quantities of Cadmium and Arsenic have not been discovered in the areas where high numbers of Kidney disease patients have been reported from.
