The opposition has charged the government of aiding large scale companies by imposing tax on the general public.
Secretary of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya Parliamentarian Udaya Gammanpila said the government will not earn income by increasing VAT for telecommunication services.
However, State Minister of Finance, Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene said,the VAT amendment was implemented as a temporary measure to manage the economy.The State Minister said the government enforced the tax amendments to avoid turmoil in the local economy.
The Ministry of Finance announced last week that it will increase the Value Added Tax or VAT to 15% with effect from 2nd of May.
