83 Death Raw Prisoners Remitted to Life Imprisonment

Recently it was reported in press that accommodation problem arose as condemned prisoners were to be kept under tight security and the number was increasing in the absence of implementing death sentence.

Followed by  a request made  by the joint committee of the Ministries of Law and Order and Prisons Reforms and Justice appointed to look into the matter,The President arrived at the decision to remit 83 inmates sentenced to death to life imprisonment.

The Commissioner General of Prisons Nishan Danasinghe said, that in an earlier in a similar instance, 32 death raw prisoners were also granted life sentences.He  expects few more inmates to receive the same concession in future and  the Ministry believes more will be granted the similar grace by the President.
