LGBT rights need to be discussed- Dr. Mahanamahewa

The time is ripe for discussions and amendments regarding the rights of homosexuals in Sri Lanka stated Attorney-at-law and Human rights activist Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa.

The way society functions has gone through a major paradigm shift in recent years and the mindsets and beliefs we held as values are in some cases defunct and irrelevant and in need of change.

Mr. Mahanamahewa presented very sound logic by assessing that the Sri Lankan penal code regarding Homosexuals is an exact copy of the Indian Penal code which in turn is a copy of the British version. Homosexuality is treated by the law as an “unnatural offence” but is nevertheless carried out in secrecy.

The activist questions that when even the British have adjusted their legislations why we cling on to their outdated bigotry.

This discrimination of the homosexual community will in time lead to a violent response when the pressure becomes too much.

Though it is difficult and a lot to ask that drastic measures be taken regarding Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender rights (LGBT) at first it would be wise with the guidance of religious leaders to have discussions as to possible avenues and that may be walked in the coming future concluded Dr. Prathiba.
