Landslide buries 6 villages in northeast Nepal: 36 killed, several missing

A landslide triggered by heavy rainfall buried six villages in Nepal’s mountainous northeast, and at least 15 people sleeping in the homes are believed to have been killed, officials said Thursday.

At least 36 people were killed and 80 seriously injured in a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in Nepal’s Taplejung district, a media report stated on Thursday.

According to sources, of the 36 victims, only five been identified so far, Kantipur news reported.

Liwang, Thokling, Thinglabu and Lingket villages have been severely-hit by the landslide. The number of casualties may rise, district authorities said.

Continuous rain and flash floods since Wednesday have hampered rescue efforts, police sources said.
