State Assembly election was held on 16 th May 2016 in 230 electorates out of total 232 electorates. Election on 2 electorates was deferred. More than 70 % of the registered voters voted in this election.
Since 1984, the DMK and the AIADMK have won alternate elections in the state. For the first time this year, there was a multi-party contest in Tamil Nadu with the consolidated third front, the People Welfare Front led by Captain Vijayakanth, challenging the titans. An exit poll was taken from people, who have voted and leaving the voting centers in Tamil Nadu. This exit poll carried out by different organizations revealed contradicting predictions. But all predictions indicate as in past elections either DMK or ADMK will capture power.

An aggregate of exit polls aired on different channels indicate the DMK-Congress is poised to capture power and, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa may end up in opposition.
