Deputy Minister, Palitha Thewarapperuma along with some parents carried a demonstration in front of Meegahathenna Primary School demanding admission of some children to grade one class . Followed by this, on June 30, the Deputy Minister entered the school and attempted to commit suicide, demanding a solution to his demand for admission .
Thewarapperuma was later admitted to hospital after fainting outside the school and was reported to have suffered from a heart attack.The principal was later forced to admit the children to the school. Teachers’ unions and other parents opposed to Thewarapperuma’s action and alleged that he assaulted the principal.
Deputy Minister Palitha Thewarapperuma and three others , who were arrested by police yesterday (5) for forcibly entering Meegahathenna Primary School were remanded till July 7.
Nine mothers who were involved in the incident were also arrested and remanded earlier. They were the mothers of the children who were forcibly enrolled to the school by Thewarapperuma on June 30.
This is an instance where law makers became the law breakers.
