Jaffna University Back to Normal for Upcoming Exams

After last week’s student clashes, normality has returned to the Jaffna University, with most of the faculties being opened for academic studies.  University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman Mohan de Silva, who this week visited the university to assess the situation, he said that the  steps had been taken to ensure peace in the university. “We had constructive discussions with the Vice Chancellor, senior academics and administrative officials over last week’s unfortunate incident. Now everything is back to normal,” he said.

A three-member committed appointed by the Government to identify the causes that led to the clashes is expected to recommend measures aimed at preventing a recurrence.  Seven of the university’s ten faculties reopened this week. The Arts, Science and Management faculties will be reopened next week since exams are scheduled to be held shortly.

Prof. de Silva said the Jaffna university crisis needed to be handled with much care as the institution was still trying to come out from the impact of the 30-year war. Vice Chancellor Vasanthy Arasaratnam appealed to the parents who were still worried about the situation to send their children so that they could be ready for the upcoming exams. She said there was no threat to students and most of them had already returned.
