The UNP and SLMC in a tug-o-war with electoral reforms

The United National Party (UNP) and the Sri Lankan Muslim Congress (SLMC) are trying to rush the 20th Amendment accused Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala De Silva. He further stated that both the UNP and SLMC have been presenting contradictory statements regarding the electoral reforms.

Siripala De Silva also stated that the opposition is determined to increase the number of Parliament seats to 255 irrespective of the Government adamant stance that it should remain at 225. He further mentioned that the opposition will present their suggestions when the 20A is debated in the Committee stage in Parliament.

The 237-seat Parliament Cabinet approved draft of the 20th Amendment was released by gazette Tuesday night.

The Opposition leader stated that they will further consult with Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya and the Electoral Sub-Committee appointed to draft the bill before presenting their amendments to the draft.

The Cabinet approved draft comprises of 145 seats from the First Past the Post system, 55 seats from the National Proportion system and 37 seat from the National List.

The UNP however clearly do not want to increase the number of seats from 225 even though 237 seats were passed by Cabinet and the SLMC are asking for two ballot papers while clearly stating they are not for the reforms but must stand by President Sirisena so he may fulfill his pledges made at the Presidential elections before the Government is dissolved concluded Mr. De Silva.
