Senior Marathi Actor Nandu Pol Passes Away

City-based senior Marathi actor Nandu Pol took his last breath on July 28 at Prayag Hospital in Dhankawadi after a prolonged illness. He was 65 years old and was a known face in the Marathi theatre, film and TV fraternity.
His works include plays like Ghashiram Kotwal, Teen Paishacha Tamasha, Mahanirvan. The reputed films he was part of include Gadvacha Lagna, Saamna, among others. He started out in the world of Marathi theatre at the age of five with a Marathi play, Sashtang Namaskar. He worked with several known actors and filmmakers, including Girish Karnad, Jabbar Patel, Sai Paranjapye, Mani Kaul, Dr Shriram Lagoo, Nasiruddin Shah, Nilloo Phule, Nana Patekar, Om Puri, Ashok Saraf, Dilip Prabhavalkar and so on. Doordarshan, Delhi, had made a documentary on his life, titled Face in the crowd.
Remembering his association with the late artiste, renowned theatre and film actor Mohan Agashe said, “When Jabbar Patel announced the play, Ghashiram Kotwal, plenty of talent poured in from Pune and Nandu (Pol) was one of them. At that time, he was a clerk at B J Medical College, Pune, and part of the administration there. That was when Jabbar Patel noticed him and he stood out completely.”
Agashe regards Pol as the only actor who conquered his physical shortcomings. Pol, said Agashe, knew the art of sound very well and thus opened a studio after his retirement. There wasn’t a single person in the industry whom he didn’t help with his studio, Agashe added. “It is a big loss to the theater group as he was very supportive towards all of us. Unfortunately, Nandu had to seek Rajiv Gandhi Yojana for his bypass surgery,” said Agashe.
Actor Rahul Solapurkar said, “We have worked together from 1983 till last week when he got admitted to the hospital. Basically, Pune is known for its Ganesh festival and the mandals that organise the festival. I started giving voice-overs for these festivals in 1980 and hence came in contact with Nandu in 1983. He was of a very cheerful nature. The last work we did together was a record for these idols in his studio. which we made last week. I cannot forget the things that we shared for 30 years and all that has now come to a sad end.”
