The recent seizure of the largest-ever cocaine haul found in an imported container of sugar, many sugar importers are afraid to claim their consignments.
Sri Lanka Customs sources said that as such there are close to 800 unclaimed containers of sugar at the harbor premises. It had been extremely difficult for importers to get their sugar consignments released due to excessive inspections by Sri Lanka Customs officials since the coke bust took place on 14th June 2016.
In the meantime it is learnt that if the sugar consignments are not released soon these stocks would not be in a consumable state as it they are perishable goods.
