Power Struggle in Southern Provincial Council?

Southern Provincial Council has 55 members. Out of which 27 UPFA members belongs to Mahinda faction, 6 UPFA members loyal to Maithree faction. The other members are from UNP 14, JVP 5and Democratic Party 3. One of the Democratic Party Members expressed his willingness to support Mahinda faction. Hence, Mahinda faction has 28 members in their fold. In other words they have simple majority in Southern Provincial Council.

In the meantime, 14 UNP members under the leadership of opposition leader, Tennakoon Nilame expressed their willingness to support the Chief Minister Shan Wijayalal De Silva. Even if other Democratic Party members and JVP supports the chief Minister the total number will be 27. Under these circumstances, Mahinda faction can easily bring no confidence motion on the administration or defeat any new proposal or law by the Southern Provincial Council.

News circulating revealed that the opposition leader Tennakoon does not want any ministerial Portfolio, Maithree is willing to provide two Ministerial Portfolios to UNP. In any case power struggle in Southern Provincial Council appears to continue.
