Educating Youths on Importance of Voting

Elections Commission organized a week long awareness programme to educate and encourage youth to register in the Electoral Register. This  programme commenced on the 5th of this month completes today. Chairman of the Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya said during the period the Commission educated the youth about the importance of excising their franchise through interactive programmes.

The programme was channelled through a national social media campaign.

Mahinda Deshapriya said the primary objective of the programme is to encourage national youth lead organisations, networks and societies to engage in creating public awareness through creative and innovative ways.

Mahinda Deshapriya said  over 300,000 youth have not registered as voters in the country and lost the right to vote at elections.

Furthermore Mahinda Deshapriya  he also said new laws will be enacted to punish those who deliberately fail to register as voters.
